Unitedworld Institute of Design, a constituent college of Karnavati University, celebrated “Automation Day” on 5th September 2018 by inviting esteemed guests from various industries and displaying state-of-the-art products ideated, designed and prototyped by our students under the guidance and mentorship of Prof. Banibrata Sarkhel and Asst. Prof. Priyam Parikh (Automobile & Transportation Design Dept.).
The guests of honor, who were also the main speakers of the day, were Mr. Santosh Bannur – General Manager TATA Motors, Sanand, Deepak Bhatawande, Senior Manager, TUV rheinland and Mr. Rajeev Yamadagni, Senior Engineer, SMC Pneumatics. Also, people from Creaxt Innovations and PTC (Mr. Saket Chakole) graced the event.
Prof. Banibrata, who has been a strong proponent of the potential associated with the integration of technology in design thinking process, talked about why there is a need for a paradigm shift in design education and how UID is incorporating the latest technologies in its pedagogy to achieve that goal.
Asst. Prof. Parikh also discussed how UID has taken innovative initiatives to build cutting-edge Automation Lab.
The guests of Honours talked on a range of topics such as Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Need of Automation in Car manufacturing, Artificial Intelligence & Virtual Reality, to IIOT (Industrial Internet of things).
In the latter half of the day, students from the Product Design Dept. displayed and explained various prototype products, that were built by them in the past six months including advanced IoT and AI-based smart devices to all the guests, faculty members, and students from other departments. Their eyes were on stalks experiencing the sheer inventiveness of the budding designers.
It was the continuous & untiring efforts and innovative ideas of Prof. Banibrata and Asst. Prof. Priyam that generated lots of interest among the students and inclined them towards undertaking technology-driven design projects. With this initiative, a combined effort of management, faculty, and students, UID is ushering in the next stage of design education where smart and advanced technologies will be an integral part of the learning process. The main aim of the event was to create designers for the present and future who will develop technologically dominant smart and intelligent products and services as needed by industry and society as a whole.
