Product Design

The Product Design course at UID trains students to create and craft relevant products based on consumer demands. Through this course, students gain knowledge necessary to create useful, innovative, attractive and artisanal products that fit the market requirement. Students are encouraged to use their imagination, creativity, critical thinking and technical knowledge to design quality products for the real world. The course includes design development, ideation, sketching, 3D rendering techniques, presentation and communication skills, ergonomics, aesthetics and technical documentation.

The course links creativity and innovation through the transformation of ideas into marketable products. Students will learn to develop a broad range of relevant skills, knowledge and attitudes that are necessary for them to become effective practitioners in the field of product design. The course will also enable them to acquire marketing capabilities to strategize, develop and promote prototypes and products, using existing and new materials. Students will work with practicing designers and professionals to design products that are useful to the market along with focusing on emerging needs that could improve the daily lives of people.

Product designers design a wide range of items, from day-to-day items like mobile phones to household appliances to cars, to larger things like industrial tools, equipment and machinery, as well as medical products. They work on new products or improve existing ones and use their understanding of technology, material and manufacturing methods to improve the design and utility of items. The work involves designing, modeling, testing and producing prototypes. Working alongside engineers and model-makers, industrial / product designers conduct research and devise a design proposal for projects.Product designing involves technical bent of the designer, as product design is all about perfect measures and shapes especially for the one working in heavy industries.

The course focus delivers understanding of product, appliances and transportation to enhance the user friendly experience and efficient human living. It explores an inborn human need of user friendly products. Beginning with the concept of basic product development, industry need and emerging technologies are the most important tools today. With the growing population and urbanization, transporting people and commodities using a variety of means and eventually creating sustainable systems for Industrial Design is the need of hour. In such case the program is not restricted to only Product and Automobile Design but also to design systems and other means which enhance human comfort and commodities as well as support interactive human living which may vary from household appliances to office equipment along with products of daily use.

The course offers 2 year rigorous study under the mentorship of experienced faculty, practicing in the workshop as well as industry experience which is followed by six months real life industry sponsored research design project. The programme will suit to most of automobile engineers/mechanical engineers/ electrical engineers, architects and product design graduates.
