Time Management and Students’ Performance

August 13, 2020

Effective time management is associated with greater academic performance and lower levels of anxiety in students; however many students find it hard to find a balance between their studies and their day-to-day lives. Lot of scientific studies have been conducted across the world to determine which aspects of time management the students practiced and which time management behaviours were more strongly associated with higher grades within the program.

Good time management skills have been identified as having a “buffering” effect on stress and are a key indication of higher performance and lower stress and anxiety in higher education. However, many students find it hard to regulate both their studies and their external lives leading to time mismanagement, poor sleep patterns, and increased levels of stress. Effective Time management offers individuals the means to structure and control their activities and is important beyond the university campus, where the capacity to manage one’s free time is found to significantly increases an individual’s quality of life.

Common Mistakes that prevents you from staying within the timelines

1) Failing to prioritize

2) Starting your day late

3) Ineffective in scheduling tasks

4) Failing to manage distractions

Students who are aware that they are unable to utilize their time properly, need to follow a scientific approach. They need to have an awareness of the factors that fill their time; have a good understanding of how long it takes to complete individual tasks; be self-directed, and need to be able to be involved in short-term planning.

In the end, we are our own worst enemy when it comes to proper time management and we have to keep ourselves in check.
