Influential Computer Scientists who Shaped the Industry: A List for Students Interested to Pursue B.Sc. (Hons.) Computer Science

In today’s world, it is hard to imagine a day without the internet, computers and smartphones. The advent of these technologically-advanced products has made life convenient. However, these ubiquitous products would not have been there had some brilliant computer scientists not worked on them. From writing codes to building machines, computer scientists have made the 21st century the era of technology. It is no surprise that bachelor’s in computer science has become one of the most popular study programmes worldwide.

If you are passionate about computer science and want to pursue B.Sc. (Hons.) Computer Science, here is a list of some of the influential computer scientists to get inspired from:

Tim Berners-Lee:

It would not be wrong to say that Tim Berners-Lee, who invented the World Wide Web, changed the course of world history. He proposed an information management system in 1989. He then went on to implement the first successful communication between a HTTP client and server via the Internet by the end of 1989. Today the World Wide Web has become a vital part of life not just for individuals but for educational institutes, hospitals, governments and businesses across the world.

      Inspiring words:

“Half-formed ideas, they float around. They come from different places, and the mind has got this wonderful way of somehow just shoveling them around until one day they fit. They may fit not so well, and then we go for a bike ride or something, and it’s better.”

― Tim Berners-Lee

Larry Page and Sergey Brin:

As computer science graduate students at Stanford University, Larry Page and Sergey Brin co-founded Google, one of the most profitable internet companies of all time. Both Page and Brin crammed a bunch of cheap computers into their dorm room and developed a data mining system. Though the data mining system became quite popular at Stanford University, the two abandoned it to start Google. Page is the inventor of PageRank, the foundation of Google’s search ranking algorithm — which contributed to much of Google’s initial success.

    Inspiring words:

“You don’t need to have a 100 person company to develop that idea.” Larry Page

“Coming up with an idea is the least important part of creating something great. It has to be the right idea and have good taste, but the execution and delivery are what’s key.” Sergey Brin

Interesting fact:

You will be surprised to know that “Google” is actually a misspelling of a real-life mathematical term “googol”.

Bill Gates:

As the co-founder and former CEO of Microsoft, the world’s largest personal-computer software company, Bill Gates is synonymous with computer science. He founded Microsoft along with his late childhood friend Paul Allen. His contribution to the microcomputer revolution of the 1970s and 1980s is significant.

Mark Zuckerberg:

A self-taught computer programmer, Zuckerberg founded Facebook, an online social media and social networking service, in his Harvard University dorm room in 2004. Facebook is the biggest social network worldwide with nearly 2.91 billion monthly active users as of the third quarter of 2021. The social media platform changed the way people world over interacted with each other. It has in many ways brought the world much closer and changed the course of IT the industry.

Inspiring words:

“The biggest risk is not taking any risk… In a world that is changing really quickly, the only strategy that is guaranteed to fail is not taking risks. “ Mark Zuckerberg

Interesting fact:

As a 12-year-old boy, Zuckerberg created an instant messaging program so that his dentist father could know when patients arrived.

In the 21st century, there is no industry that is untouched by technological innovation. A bachelor’s in computer science programme can lead to lucrative and rewarding careers in the global IT market. If you want to make a career in the IT industry, check out B.Sc. (Hons.)
