Leadership Tips for Students Planning to Pursue BBA Marketing

August 4, 2022 As we look ahead to the next century, leaders will be those who empower others. – Bill Gates, founder of Microsoft.   If you are planning to start a career in the field of marketing, at some point, you will get into roles that will require you to take leadership roles and manage other people. Possessing good leadership skills is important for you to effectively empower others to reach a common goal. When you have good leadership skills, you are better at making decisions, which is often critical in the fast-paced world of marketing. If you plan to pursue a BBA marketing management, here are some tips for developing strong leadership skills:  
  1. Cultivate self-discipline:
It is essential to have the discipline to be called a good leader. Developing discipline in your life inspires others to follow you. You must know that great leaders know that their actions can influence others more than their words. To lead by example, you must put your words into action.  
  1. Take a lead role in college projects:
Taking responsibility is one of the ways to develop your leadership skills. Take a lead role in college projects. By leading different college projects, you can learn the skill of delegating, helping fellow classmates stay on task and resolving problems that may come in the way.  
  1. Develop conflict resolution skills:
To develop leadership skills, it is important to be able to resolve conflict effectively. You must learn to identify the source of the conflict. Once you have identified the source of the problem, you can begin to look for solutions. It is important to be able to communicate effectively with the parties involved in the conflict. By communicating openly and honestly, you can help to create an understanding and find common ground.  
  1. Become an effective communicator:
If you want to be an effective leader, you have to be an effective communicator. Effective communication is important to ensure that everybody is on the same page and working towards the same goal. Here are some tips for being an effective communicator:   Practise active listening: When someone is talking to you, listen to them with all your attention and get the essence of their message. Actively pose relevant questions so that the other person can further elaborate, making the cover nation meaningful and purposeful. Ensure clarity in your speech: When communicating, speak in specifics. When you are leading college projects, the more clear you are, the less confusion there will be. Write precisely and clearly: This is the most important communication skill that many marketing students tend to neglect. Be direct and concise so that the meaning of the message is lost in jargon or unnecessary adjectives. Focus on your body language: Body language plays a key role in attracting the attention of other people. Talking with clenched fists and a grimacing face is unlikely to send a positive message.
  1. Learn from real-life leaders:
As a student of BBA marketing management, do not miss any opportunity to learn from real-life leaders. You must attend conferences, webinars, guest lectures and master classes hosted by industry leaders. By interacting with successful marketing executives, you’ll develop a deep understanding of what it takes to be successful in this dynamic field. You can even learn a lesson or two in leadership by reading books written by or about successful CEOs. Try reading:
  • The Google Guys by Richard L. Brandt.
  • The Road Ahead by Bill Gates, Nathan Myhrvold, and Peter Rinearson.
