The Hindi word for underpants has become the latest entry to the Oxford English Dictionary. Out of the 650 Hindi words in the Oxford English Dictionary (OED) , chuddies is now one of the words.
In the March update of
the Oxford English dictionary chuddies joined the ranks of pony bottles,
jibbons and kitbasher, among others
Identifying it is an
Indian English word in origin, the entry for chuddies in the Oxford English
Dictionary provides its meaning: “Short trousers, shorts. Now
usually: underwear; underpants.”
The OED blog post
refers to the popularity of the word chuddies and states that the line became a
popular catchphrase thanks to actor and writer Sanjeev Bhaskar
who played one half of the teenage duo known as the Bhangra Muffins
in the 1990s BBC comedy sketch show Goodness Gracious Me.”
