6 Greatest Inventions in Computer Programming: Interesting Read for Students Planning to Pursue B.Sc. (Hons.) Computer Science

Computers are one of the greatest gifts of science and today they have become an indispensable part of everyday life. Today, it is hard to imagine life without them. But do you know the computer was first used in 1613 to describe a human who performed calculations or computations? However, the definition changed by the end of the 19th century with the rise of the machine. It is important for computer science students to know about the inventions that paved the way for newer technologies that we see now.   If you are planning to study .B.Sc. (Hons.) Computer Science, here are 6 greatest inventions in computer science that you would be interested to know:

  1. First computer program: It is interesting to note that the first computer program was designed in 1883 by Ada Lovelace. The purpose of this program was to help Charles Babbage, the father of the computer, with Bernoulli number computations. She was the first to recognize that the machine can be used for things other than calculation and she is often regarded as the first computer programmer.
  2. The first computer network: Though ARPANET was one of the earliest computer networks, the first computer network was invented employing electromechanical relays. However, these machines became obsolete as they were based on slow mechanical relays rather than electronic switches.
  3. First programming language: The first high-level programming language was Plankalkül. Each Plankalkül instruction requires multiple rows to write down. Though Plankalkül was the first programming language developed for computers, FORTRAN was the first widely used high-level programming language. Unlike Plankalkül, FORTRAN did not require too many sentences.
  4. First commercial desktop computer: For many people, home computers are synonymous with Windows and Bill Gates. However, it was Perottina or P101 which was one of the first “all in one” commercial personal computers.
  5. First email: Today, we send emails day in and day out. But do you know that the first email was sent in 1971? This was shortly after ARPANET was created. Ray Tomlinson, a computer programmer, initiated the use of the ‘@’ sign to separate the names of the user and the user’s machine.
  6. Internet: When you think of the internet, you think of browser windows, websites, URLs, and search bars. But behind its invention are an intricate set of communication protocols. Computer scientists Vinton Cerf and Bob Kahn invented the Internet communication protocols that we use today. It would not be wrong to say that the knowledge revolution that we are witnessing today is all because of this greatest invention of the 20th century.
