GDP students attending Australia module

24 July 2023

After all the planning, applying, waiting & apprehension, finally, the B. Des GDP Year 2 students made it to their campus- Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne. The first day was filled with an orientation by the Study Abroad office. The Karnavati University students are among 220 students from 21 countries who are here for semester exchange….Wow!! This was followed by an Aussie-style Barbeque lunch on the campus lawns. The day ended with games because nobody is ever too old for some fun and games…& it’s the best way to make new friends!! Stay tuned for more adventures from the land down under.

26 July 2023

The cohort of the B. Des Global Design Programme are now also students of the Swinburne University of Technology; they just got their ID cards! Today the students had an academic orientation followed by an exclusive Indian lunch organized for them. Then came the big event- ‘Race around Melbourne’. The students were put into groups with other exchange students from the world over & sent to explore the vibrant city of Melbourne on a treasure hunt. They covered all the hot spots from Federation Square to Melbourne Central & Chinatown to Yarra River. Students explored the graffiti on Hosier Lane as well as cafes on Hardware Lane. The finishing point was none other than the iconic Victoria Market! A day well spent exploring their new home, making new friends, and building new experiences.

27 July 2023

As the B. Des Global Design Programme Year 2 students settle in, let us have a look at their new home for the next 4 months in Melbourne. The student accommodation at Scape Aurora in Melbourne CBD with its common lounge, swimming pool, games room & theatre room provides a space for all social & leisure activities. The bedrooms & study rooms allow for quiet rest & study time. The kitchenettes challenge you to be independent & cook your meals. Wishing our students the very best in this new way of living & learning!

28 July 2023

Adding to their range of new learning experiences, the B. Des GDP Year 2 students went on a visit to the Hawthorn Art Center in Boroondara in Melbourne to look at 2 varied exhibits. Organized by the Swinburne University of Technology & guided by the curators at the gallery, this visit encouraged students to investigate the role of art as a mode of expression in both the context & the presentation. The play of different mediums within the artworks pushed the students to look at conventional as well as unconventional materials within their own design projects. All in all, an afternoon well spent!

01 August 2023

Let us look at what our B. Des GDP Year 2 students are up to in Melbourne. Well, learning new life skills like cooking their own meals and that too in a communal kitchen, with people from other cultures and nationalities. The students juggle to use new equipment like the rice cooker and develop an appreciation of new smells & tastes of Japanese food & Korean food & German food – all being cooked in the same kitchen at the same time. They are also cooking yummy Indian food with an inviting aroma that fills the kitchen & is a great conversation starter. Moreover, the contentment to enjoy your own cooking almost helps forget the cleaning duties that follow. Living overseas is not just about academics, but also about learning to be independent, responsible individuals.

02 August 2023

Finally, the B. Des GDP Year 2 students have started their classes at Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne. It’s a new experience, both as a living culture & an academic culture. From running to catch the tram or train every morning with their MYKI cards (public transport cards) to enjoying the landscape as Melbourne wakes up for yet another day. The students are meeting so many other students from across the globe in their classes and at various Orientation activities that have been organized on campus for the entire week. The students are also getting fully immersed in their classes, activities, projects, and assignments- the life of a Design student is the same whether in India or in Melbourne!

Visit to National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne

Let us look at our B. Des GDP Year 2 students visiting National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne. The gallery’s unique architecture, extensive art collections, and cultural significance provided valuable insights and creative ideas for our aspiring designers. The combination of historical and contemporary elements in the gallery’s design, as well as its role in showcasing various forms of art, served as a rich source of inspiration for our students to explore and expand their design skills. Stay tuned for more updates from the land of kangaroos!!
