How is the Fashion Industry Leveraging the Power of Technology?

Technologies have changed the way people work, shop or even watch TV. And, the fashion industry is no exception to this technological revolution. The power of technology is bringing efficiency in the creative process as well as how the fashion designers are interacting with their clients. From using robots to drive business efficiencies in warehouses and factories to using artificial intelligence to give customers a more individual experience, the fashion industry is coming out with incredible products and services that are using not just the skills of fashion designers but also of the computer engineers.  If you are a student who wants to study at a reputed fashion institute of design & merchandising, here are some useful insights on how fashion industry is leveraging the power of technology:

  1. Brands embracing robots to speed up manufacturing: Robotics is making an impact in the fashion industry behind the scenes. Many brands are using robotics to speed up manufacturing in warehouses. Last year, the US apparel chain Gap tripled the number of item-picking robots for assembling online orders to limit human contact during the pandemic.
  2. Augmented Reality ( AR) makes inroads in retail stores: Many fashion retailers are leveraging the power of AR to give their customers a smooth shopping experience. For instance, Zara introduced AR displays which showed models wearing selected designs when a user holds the mobile phone up to a sensor within a store or designated shop windows. H&M started an AR initiative that was GPS-linked that let shoppers virtually try outfits, click pictures and post them on social media and create their own personal look books. AR is also playing a huge role in future beauty shopping. For instance, Sephora’s Visual Artist lets users try virtual makeup at home. It scans a user’s face and let the user try on different makeup products and looks,
  3. Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to forecast fashion trends: Social media is changing the way fashion is consumed. In today’s market, trends  can change seemingly overnight. Therefore, many brands such as H&M, Zara and Mango are using AI to keep up with the change. Trend forecasting platforms are using image recognition technology to scan social media images and predict future fashion trends. By predicting trends before they happen, AI helps brands adapt their designs and better plan their merchandise.
