● Pick interesting practice topics: The best way you can develop excellent debating skills is that you participate in debates. A good way to do that is to pick practice topics of your interest. Research on the topics and argue them from both sides. Doing this will boost your interest as well as confidence.

● Focus on facts: A good debate is the one where you back your arguments with good evidence and that you can do when you have researched the topic well and you have all the facts and figures. The validity of facts will your argument a strong foundation. Be sure to fact-check because when you will become a lawyer and in the court of law the opponent will try to find flaws in your argument.

● Watch debates: The difference between debating and a presentation is that in a debate there is an opponent who will be arguing a point different to yours. Watch how politicians, academics and law students deliver their arguments and how they respond to points that go against what they are saying. There many online platforms where you can watch debates.

● Work on your tone and body language: Once you have researched your material thoroughly, work on your language and tone. Get the language right and make sure the tone is firm but not aggressive. A very crucial part of public speaking is body language and facial expressions. One great idea is to tape your record, watch and identify areas of improvement. The skills that you develop while debating will be of great help in not just law career but in everyday interactions.
