Ph.D. in Law: How To Select Your Dissertation Topic?

Choosing a dissertation topic for your thesis is a very essential part of your Ph.D. in law. As a dissertation is a long piece of writing, the topic you choose will determine how easy or hard your writing journey will be. From criminal law to civil law, from immigration law to human rights, topics are galore. If you are wondering how to select your dissertation topics, here are some tips that you may find useful:
  • Choose a topic you are passionate about: The first step is to pick a law thesis topic that interests you. As a researcher, you are expected to go deep down into the issue and identify its many aspects. If you are passionate about a topic interesting, it will keep you motivated throughout the research. If you choose a dull topic, you may lose interest at some stage.

  • Do your homework: Read anything and everything related to this topic and try to get familiar with all the ideas and possibilities around it. Try to understand the basics of research methodologies before diving deep into the process. Skim through all the resources available and then consider your next step. Remember, it’s the topic that is going to decide the course of your entire research journey.

  • Make sure it’s unique and original: While choosing a topic, you must also find out what’s already been written about it. Once you know that you should find a unique angle that you can give to ensure that the paper stands out. The topic should be such that you are able to showcase your past learning and knowledge and make a unique academic contribution. If you are planning to a rather common area for research, make sure you add a fresh new perspective to it.

  • Assess resource availability: It is important to have enough resources and tools around the topic. Look for authentic databases, catalogues, and any digital information to broaden your perspective. No matter how challenging your topic is, it must be researchable, which greatly depends on the availability of data.

  • Analyse the scope of your topic: Your topic should neither be too broad or too narrow. Aiming for something too broad will add vagueness to your research activity. At the same time, a narrow topic will make you struggle for adequate content. It’s a good idea to pick a topic you are familiar with so that you don’t have to start from scratch. Having some prior idea gives you a good starting point to research more.

  • Seek expert guidance: Before choosing a topic, it’s a good idea to talk to experts. Your mentors, professors or even seniors could give a fresh perspective to your topic and share their expertise. Your mentors have years of experience guiding other students, so you can be sure to receive some great advice if they see any inconsistencies in your topic.
