Kallol Datta Workshop -SWADDLING TO SHROUDING

A 5-day workshop delving into past and existing clothing practices, specific to the NAWA, East Asia and Indian Subcontinent Regions. Datta’s body of work, which has focused on forming templates of native wear and garments ascribed to religious doctrines, will be presented. A group visit with all workshop participants to Navjivan Trust’s Art Gallery, Ahmedabad will take place as well on Day 3, to visit eminent artist Ashok Ahuja’s exhibition ‘NAVAJIVAN NAGAR’. This workshop will be a starting point to view how certain garments are seemingly similar in form but differ greatly when their details are brought into focus. Students will have to complete a practical exercise in clothes making during the course of this workshop.

As a part of the 5-day workshop students started to view how certain garments are seemingly similar in form but differ greatly when their details are brought into focus. They started working on their practical exercise in clothes making with expert comments from Mr. Kallol himself.

The students shared the stories of their creation that delved deep into social topics of the Nawa region, as well as technically complex pattern cutting. They were critiqued by Mr. Kallol Datta post which was guided by him into experimental photoshoots and documentation of the work. Altogether it was an enthralling experience.
