Panel Discussion on the Criminal Legal System

The Centre for Research in Criminal Law organized a panel discussion on the criminal legal system, on the 17th of April 2023. The event saw the presence of esteemed resource persons Advocate Antrix N. Kapadiya and Advocate Maharshi Patel, with extensive practice on the Criminal side, who shared their insights on various topics under the ambit of Criminal Law. The discussion focused on various topics related to the criminal legal system, including Race, Space, and Democracy: Locally Based Strategies for Development, Reimagining the Criminal Legal System, Police Accountability, Integrity, and Oversight. The goal of the panel discussion was to facilitate the clarification of knotty issues and highlight the multi-dimensionality of the topic. Advocate Antrix N. Kapadiya shared his insights on the challenges facing the criminal legal system in India and how it could be reimagined to better serve the interests of justice. He emphasized the need for police accountability and integrity in the system, which would improve public trust in the police force. Advocate Maharshi Patel highlighted the importance of locally-based strategies for development and the role that race and space play in shaping the criminal legal system. He emphasized the need for a nuanced understanding of the issue, which takes into account the diverse perspectives of different communities. Overall, the panel discussion provided a platform for exchanging ideas and insights on the criminal legal system, which is an important aspect of the Indian legal system.
