Useful Insights on Light Design Curated by a Leading Interior Design Institute

Lighting is one of the most important aspects of interior design. Proper lighting has the ability to change the mood of a room and the perceived size of a room. Modern interior design involves the appropriate use of light to create the right mood and adjust the ambiance of interior spaces.  If you are planning to become an interior designer, it is important that you know how different lighting sources that help create functional spaces that meet the needs of prospective clients.   As a leading interior design institute, we share with you useful insights on light design:

  • Different types of lighting: To light a space home properly, interior designers use three layers of lighting―general, task, and accent.
  1. General lighting: It could be the day light or any light source that substitutes for natural light. General lighting is the primary source of lighting in a space. It uniformly illuminates the room. General lighting can be accomplished by using:
  • Chandeliers and other ceiling fixtures
  • Track lights
  • Recessed ceiling lights
>> Task lighting: As name suggest helps you perform specific tasks, such as reading, grooming, cooking and working on hobbies. Task lighting should be free of distracting glare and shadows. Interior designers achieve task lights by using:
  • Table lamps
  • Desk lamp
  • Under counter lights
  • Pendant lights
  • Adjustable spotlights
  • Recessed lights
  • Vanity lights (bathrooms and vanity rooms)
  • Adjustable floor lamps
For selecting task light sources, activities that need to perform in each room should be taken into consideration.   >> Accent lighting: Interior designers use accent lighting for decorative purpose and to add drama to a room by creating visual interest. It is used to draw the attention to artwork, plants, statues and other decorative items. Some examples of accent lighting are:
  • Pendant lights
  • Candlelights
  • Directed track or recessed lights
  • Wall scones
  • Chandeliers with dimmer switches

  • Color temperature: Selecting the right color temperature influences the look or the feel of the room. Color temperature describes the appearance of light emitted by a bulb. Choosing the right color temperature is quite subjective as different people perceive and experience lights differently. For instance, yellow light sources are often used in places such as hotels and restaurants where relaxed environment needs to be created. For office, bluish-white lights are preferred as they are good focus and productivity.

  • Color rendering: A color rendering index is an assessment of how the light source shows colors of objects when compared to daylight. Color rendering is often confused with color temperature. But they are not the same. Color rendering means how an object will appear under certain light condition. The color rendering index is an important factor which is taken into account in the retail industry and other businesses to select  light sources.
