On the 8th of October, 2020; we took a virtual tour through The Brick Store with Mr. Ronak Prajapati – the owner, and his team. They gave us a live tour of the store by showing us all the different types of bricks and brick claddings produced by their company along with the vital information regarding bricks and their use.
Out of the varied types of bricks that we saw, the one that caught my attention were the ‘perforated bricks.’ These are regular sized bricks, with cavities on their surface, also called perforations.
The reasons to make these perforations in the brick are multi-faceted. These perforations reduce the weight of the brick, which makes the load on the wall lesser. They also provide sound insulation by increasing the thermal insulation. The bricks can also be used with steel rods passing through them as a design element. If arranged in a specific way, they can form a kind of jaali partition wall which can also be an interesting design element. The perforations in the bricks also allow mortar to pass through which helps to solidify and strengthen the structure.
These varied uses make the perforated bricks to be one of the popular types of bricks used not only for construction, but also for façade and interior design.
