M.Des. Industrial Design

Semester – 1

KU Core Courses

KU core courses are curated to ensure a common graduate profile across all schools of the university. These courses have been selected to give our students essential skills for their professional growth.

Professional Communication

This course aims to engage with various types of communication skills and interpretation of verbal and non-verbal communication with accuracy and efficacy. It also develops verbal and written presentation skills.

Leadership Lab

This course aims to learn and adopt cross-functional leadership roles and responsibilities. It also provides strong focus on creating core leadership skills contributing effectively to the entire life eco-system.

Programme Course Courses

Programme core courses are fundamental to skill and concept building in disciplinary contexts. Each department has carefully curated these sections with a focus on technological and conceptual future industry directions.

Art, Design and Culture

The course aims to introduce a contemporary historical survey of trends in design history from the start of the new millennium into the present, with a focus on the media and information revolution, together with a trend within the design from object to experience, the study of Art movements through history and their impact on worldwide culture, i.e., art, architecture, crafts, apparel, etc.

Visualisation & Representation

This course aims to enhance manual dexterity with a focus on fundamental skills in both freehand and technical drawing methods, which serves as the foundation to use drawing as a tool for the representation of dimensional reality and creative imagination.

Material Exploration

This course introduces you to various kinds of materials their attributes, characteristics, and properties. It also aims at developing the ability and techniques to handle various materials.

Digital Tools – 1

An introductory course, which acquaints students with basic design software, enables them to present their ideas with the help of a digital medium. This aims to integrate digital media in multiple aspects of design and establishment of optimized workflows that involve the use of multiple digital tools.

Design Process

This course provides an overview of the design process i.e. the steps used to arrive at an innovative new product, system, or service. It offers an introduction to design and explains why one should leverage the process of design to develop new product ideas, drive innovation, and transform systems. 

Basic Design

The course will expose and guide students through the process of arranging design elements in interrelation with a logical approach, to communicate and produce the expected and the intended. It will also develop the ability to communicate and develop aesthetics in design.

Thinking Skills

The course introduces the student to the methods of lateral thinking, critical thinking, and analytical skills to solve problems and take creative decisions. The course aims to equip students with a diverse range of skills including synthesis, analysis, teamwork, time management, and problem-solving, among others.

Programme Common Courses

Design Criticism and aesthetics

The course explores the subject of Aesthetics in the Indian and Western traditions and introduces the students to Indian Aesthetics, Iconography, art terms, and concepts. It also helps to examine and explore the link between art, design, and aesthetics.

Form space and structure

To comprehend the inherent structures and emotive qualities of various forms, spaces, and composite systems. It provides an ability to discern and establish direct, and indirect connectivity and associations between forms, their visual expression, and perception.

Digital Tools – II

This course aims to acquire skills to inter-operate with multiple digital tools in a well-thought-out and standardized workflow.

Discover Design in India

This course aims to experience the diversity of Indian crafts, materials, techniques, and designs to develop sensitivity toward the application of the same in contemporary designs.

User Research Method

This course aims to develop skills and understand User-Centered Design. It helps to recognize the role of user research in different phases of the design process.

Model Making

To gain experience in tools & materials ability to visualize & realize the products. The ability to make appropriate models in scale and proportion.

Integrated Foundation Project – Product Design

Students will gain experience in recognition and comprehension of contextual issues of products concerning aesthetics, style, and consumer segments associated with them. It will develop capabilities to analyze, and comprehend the nuances of developing simple products.

Professional Ethics

The course provides students with the concepts, methods, and theories needed to analyze moral problems in a variety of professions and workplaces. The course aims to describe the accepted principles and standards of conduct of moral duties and virtues as applied to an organization. Professional ethics is necessary to reveal, sustain and enhance certain basic human values.

Programme Common Courses

The program’s common course is curated to ensure a common graduate profile across all departments of UID. These courses are essential for the academic and professional grooming of a student into a design professional.

Creative Coding

Creative Coding is a practice, an experiential learning-based course designed to teach basic programming skills in the context to create something expressive like live visuals, visual art, and design, entertainment/video games, sound art, art installations, project mapping, product prototypes, advertising, and branding formats. This course aims to create a small human-machine interface with basic interaction using Arduino and processing and create interfaces between digital screens, sensors, and actuators.

Elective Courses

Program elective courses are offered by departments to give students choice-based learning spaces, and expand micro specializations within a discipline.

Programme Elective – 1 (any one)

Color, Material and Finishes (CMF)
This course aims to enhance the skill sets of visual observations and specifically in the domain of colour, material and finish. It will provide an ability to understand the psychology behind the usage of colours and their application.
Digital Sketching
It helps to create concepts faster and quicker in a presentable way. It helps to achieve the translation of ideas through a simple representation.

Programme Elective – 2 (any one)

Introduction to AR/VR/MR
It gives good knowledge about VR & AR devices, game engines, hardware, software, technology & 3D applications.
Product Photography
This course aims to understand the basics of photography, natural lighting, and communicating via photo/video format.

KU open elective is a unique initiative by Karnavati University aimed and building a transdisciplinary culture. Extending our focus on the choice-based learning model, these courses offer opportunities to engage with subjects outside their specialisations.

Form Studies

It gives insights into principles of form transition and various visual tools such as radii manipulation to generate emotive qualities in forms as well as form integration.

3D CAD Modelling

To gain experience in understanding 2D technical drawings of products digitally and an ability to operate all 3D tools in the software.

Physical Ergonomics

This course aims to understand and integrate scientific methodology and design products. To understand the physical aspects of comfort, efficiency, utility and safety in human-machine interface, processes and services.

Entrepreneurship

This course helps to understand the importance of opportunity recognition and internal and external analyses to the success of a business venture. To understand the importance of the marketing plan to obtaining, maintaining and expanding an entrepreneur’s reach to its target market.

Tinkering Studio

Tinkering studio allows students to experiment with various materials, techniques, technologies, tools etc and explore their real-world possibilities. The course aims to encourage the exploration of ideas and concepts to learn, discover and reinforce new and learnt skills.

Generative Design
To understand the principles and terminologies of generative design and its implementation in product design.
Design Standards
This course aims to understand the standards of product design and the application of product-specific standards.

Story telling
To make them aware of the importance of tracing back to their roots of stories. To find the fluidity to transcend from visual art to performing art to literature.
Modular Design
The students will be able to analyze the need and applications of modularity across products and experiences.
