London Diaries – study trip

September 24, 2019

The students of Interior Design, Fashion Design, Visual Communication Design, Animation & Graphics Design of Unitedworld Institute of Design (UID), 34 students accompanied by Asst. Prof. Mira Patel and Asst. Prof. Abhrojit Boral started the excursion to London – A city where different lifestyle live together giving an entirely different experience.

In London, art is all around you. This is particularly true in the streets of East London’s trendsetting Shoreditch that are emblazoned with creative street art all around the year.
On the first day of the tour, students visited the Shoreditch high street to explore and witness these unique street arts.

Shoreditch is one of those places that all you need to do is walk around these cobbled streets and simply soak in the art around you. On each side of the street you come across the artwork by the artists.

On the second day of the trip, the students visited the Victoria and Albert museum wherein the students experienced, indigenous architecture and the displays.
Museum had a lot of natural light coming in the space, through huge fenestrations on the ceiling, and those louvres were automatic and could be closed easily as well. Other than that the interiors were quite subtle in terms of colour, warmness was given to space through the usage of a cluster of warm white spotlights, wherever necessary. A lot of temporary installations were there but one of them particularly stood out. It was a huge cube in which it showed various sea animals digitalised on it and it showed the property of light and shadow.

The Art Gallery is divided into several sections to display paintings and artwork. Each section is connected with one another through wall openings of different sizes. These openings are comparatively smaller than the arches. There use of dark marble for doorcases giving the extensions a degree of internal consistency with the older rooms.

The colour scheme of the interiors is monochrome. In order to highlight the paintings, the colours of the walls is white and the borders of the paintings are golden with engravings on it. There is wooden flooring with granite peripheral.

Each section is double-height, with frosted windows on the top of the ceiling. The roof has spot track lights for the painting and there is internal ducting throughout the gallery.
