Cumulative Evaluation

August 18, 2020

After conducting a century of workshops with school going students, I have realized that there is a flaw in the system that wants to be more result centric than learning-centric. I have counselled more than ten thousand students in the past decade and have realized that students face mental block in the learning and development of the concepts that they are weak in. The students want to skip the examination pattern as it requires them to perform at the unforeseen situations. Spoon feeding has become the new norm with the rising private schools in the country that has the responsibility of nurturing more than 90 percent youth of the country.

In one of my interactions with the 11-12, CBSE Commerce-Science students, I realized that the students carry a similar phobia. Phobia of forgetting the concepts learned during the early days of childhood. The students were continually avoiding questions that they could have quickly answered. The fundamental learning of the principles and concepts is tested in every entrance exam, such as CAT Common Aptitude Test, GATE, GRE Graduate Record Examination, GMAT Graduate Management Aptitude Test, to name a few. Irrespective of domain, field, or stream, candidates are expected to remember the fundamental concept learned during school life. The problem is dangerous, but there is a solution to overcome it. If the education system adopts the cumulate evaluation technique, then, remembering the concept becomes the way of life. E.g., if the student appears for the exam in class 9, the student can be asked questions from the syllabus of all the standards that he/she has studied so far. Possibly the idea of conducting cumulative evaluation, as a part of adult education can bring the revolution in the education system.
