How’s the joke…?

March 3, 2020

A tweet from Prime Minister Narendra Modi last night sent social media into a tizzy! In the tweet, the PM said he was contemplating giving away his social media presence.

“This Sunday, thinking of giving up my social media accounts on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram & YouTube. Will keep you all posted,” he tweeted from the handle @narendramodi that has 32 million followers.

As one of the most followed political leaders on social media, this tweet created quite a flutter with #NoSir trending soon! A lot of hearts seemed broken with this announcement, there was quite a lot of trolling too, even as media organizations got busy speculating the reason.

The whole country kept scratching their heads about what it could be, PM Modi’s social media presence was a hot topic of debate everywhere today – including with my students in class. And now, he has revealed that he will be “giving away” his social media accounts to “women whose life and work inspire us” on March 8 to mark International Women’s Day.

…and social media goes into a tizzy again!
