Government Initiatives for Toll Collection using Technology

March 28, 2021

As we have seen the advancement of technology in all the areas in the last few years. The advancement of technology generally increases the convenience and speed of doing the work. So, by implementing FASTtag in vehicles using RFID technology has increased the speed of collecting toll and it saves fuel and reduces the pollution as well. The data from National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) says that the daily toll collection stood at Rs. 90 crore compared to 70 crore a year ago. By the adaptation of FASTtag the year collection of toll is expected to be Rs. 34000 cr by mar 2021 compared to last year of Rs. 24000 cr. FASTtag contributes to three-fourth of the total toll collections as per the data from NHAI. As stated by the Union minister for road transport and highways Mr. Nitin Gadkari, “With the help of the Russian Government we have accepted the GPS system and in the next two years we will have a toll collection system running on GPS technology.” The GPS will help to track the movement of the vehicle based on which the toll amount will be deducted directly from the bank account of the driver. By implementing this technology, it is expected that the toll collection would reach 1.34 trillion in the next five years. With the use of this technology there won’t be any leakages in the toll collection and the money transfer would be transparent.
