Mr. B Bhaumik is a Mechanical Engineer followed by Post Graduation in Industrial Design from Industrial Design Center, IIT, Mumbai in 1972. He belongs to one of the first batches of Industrial Designers in India. He has experience in the field of automotive styling, design, engineering and implementation spanning over four and a half decades. He pioneered Automotive Styling at OEMs in India.
He has worked with a number of OE Manufacturers, namely TELCO (now Tata Motors), Bajaj Auto, Kinetic Engineering and Mahindra & Mahindra.
His work includes styling, engineering and implementation of a range of Tata Trucks (Tata1516, Tata1210), Tatamobile Series of Vehicles, Two Wheelers (Bajaj Rave,Bajaj Spirit, Bajaj Legend, Bajaj Saphire, Bajaj Chetak 4S Bajaj 3W Diesel), SUVs (Mahindra Scorpio, Mahindra Xylo,), Small Trucks (Mahindra Genio, Mahindra Maxximo), etc.
His last assignment at M&M had been piloting the Mahindra XUV5oo Project right from conceptualization to successful implementation.
At MAHINDRA & MAHINDRA LTD, he retired as Senior Vice President & Head of Product Development, Auto Division, on 31st March, 2012. He was responsible for Styling, Engineering and implementation of all new as well as current vehicles in the Automotive Sector of M&M between 2006 and 2012.
Post retirement, he worked as Advisor to Mahindra & Mahindra Limited, and lead a Project on setting up of Mahindra Technical Academy at Mahindra Research Valley, Chennai, for the purpose of providing continuous technical education to all the engineers engaged in Product Development in the areas of Automobiles & Tractors.
He is currently working as Engineering and Product Strategy Consultant, and has a large range of OEM and Tier 1 Clients. His areas of specialization include Styling, Product Design Engineering, Value Engineering, Manufacturing Quality Assessment & Improvement, Product Planning & Strategy, Product Development Organization Structure, etc. He has conducted many Value Engineering Workshops for a number of OEMs like Tata Motors, Mahindra and Mahindra, TVS Motors, etc.
Currently, his major assignment is leading a Project for design, development and implementation of a brand new Passenger Van from grounds up, for which it has completed Pre-Production Trials at his client’s plant in central India.
He had taught at Industrial Design Centre, IIT, Bombay, as Distinguished External Faculty, between 2012 and 2015.
He has been a member of first India Design Council, which has been set up by the Govt of India to promote Design Awareness across the country, for two consecutive terms, between 2010 and 2015.
He received the first Lifetime Achievement Award for Styling And Development of Automobiles From Society of Indian Automotive Manufacturers in 2014.
