Sonia Manchanda

Designer and Naturalist, Designing strategies, ideas, narratives, brands, experiences.
Sonia Manchanda is Founding Partner at Spread Design and Innovation. Elected Board Member of the World Design Organisation. Creator of the Design Barn, curator at Design Open and conscious caretaker of the Design Farm in Bengaluru, India.

The Dream:in Project, an independent, individual endeavour that bridged academia and practice received global recognition as a gamechanger with global participation and following, plus mentions in significant publications

Sonia Manchanda graduated with a Masters in Design, Visual Communication and Film from India’s elite National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad.

She went on to set up design organisations that would get business and governance to value the role of design as strategy and experience, deploying creativity at scale to the toughest challenges, for the boldest business outcomes.

Her significant, most impactful, and visible projects would be the design of the brand and experience of the new Goa Airport, the brand and strategy for the Kochi Airport / CIAL. The Identity, Design and Look of the 19th Commonwealth Games. The inception of and ongoing design of the MAHE University, MAHE Bengaluru and Hospital brand Manipal. Thought Book and Design of the Brand of CMRU University. Creation of the Brand and Campus Experience of We School / Welingkar University.

Change Projects for Government include : Millets as a new food solution, developed for the Karnataka Government, adopted by the PMO. Behaviour change around waste, water and sanitation across rural Karnataka. Communication, Design and Film for the National Highways. She’s a practitioner developing tools and frameworks, connecting the dots to catalyse positive change while creating new tools and frameworks to democratise design.

Sonia Manchanda is a member of the India Design Council, is on the CII Design Council and is a Governing Council Member of Forge, an incubator in Coimbatore. She is also a trustee at Nrityagram, the only ‘dance village’ in the world.

Profile
Sonia Manchanda is a designer entrepreneur, having set up one of India’s early practices working on design strategy and visual design (1997 – 2005). Transitioned to founding a larger firm when two firms merged to create India’s largest integrated design practice with a global reputation (2005 – 2015). She then went independent along with her husband and team. Spread is the result of many years of experience on large projects, millions of square feet of retail developed across India and direct feedback from shaping human experience. With projects in Brazil and elsewhere.

Significantly, Sonia Manchanda developed The Dream:in Project (2010), a perspective, framework, tools and training around designing make a shift in focus from needs to dreams, to free up the imagination of people everywhere, empowering and energise people. The Dream:in Project became a global engagement, activation and movement involving Universities and Leaders in policy, academia and industry. Across India, China, Brazil. The project has been recognised as a global gamechanger by Metropolis Magazine USA (2013), earned a chapter in Creative Intelligence, an important book by Bruce Nussbaum. Presented at the International Conference of Innovative Cities, Curitiba, Brazil with global impact. She shared methodology for the creation of the campaign “Meu Sonho Verde” in Curitiba, which was the inspiration for the UN campaign Green Dreams around the World at Rio + 20.

Spread Design and Innovation is a seven year old practice (2015 onwards), growing strong. As a transdisciplinary firm bridging physical and digital brand and experience, strategy and craft. Plus film as a unique offering. Spread has a stellar reputation in Brand and Experience Design, expertise in design led media and technology, with film production capabilities. Spread has investments in its own independent projects around design and innovation creativity, culture and entrepreneurship evangelisation; The Design Barn as India’s first independent design center and Design Open as a global design network.

Spread is taking the responsibility to actively demonstrate that design is the new strategy. Defining the experience of new greenfield infrastructure like Airports, Universities, shaping incubators working on climate change, creating new food solutions, shaping new behaviours with Governments.

Spread Design and Innovation is a member of the World Design Organization (WDO)®, a globally recognized non-governmental organization that aims to promote and advance the discipline of industrial design and its power to enhance economic, social, cultural and environmental quality of life. Founded in 1957, WDO services over 180 member organizations around the world.

Sonia has created the design sense method and program to enable the next generation of creative leaders to Dare. Plus a Design Response Lab, for industry to take on complex challenges and transform their culture, sprint by sprint or rather Dare by Dare. Her intent is to spread design as a way to sense the shifts, to respond with creativity, optimism and imagination.
