National Seminar on Privacy & AI

Unitedworld School of Law organized a One day National Seminar on “A Paradigm Shift of Right to Privacy and Artificial Intelligence in the Contemporary Digitalized World” organised by Centre for Advanced Research in Constitutional Law (CARCL) on October 12, 2019.

The Inaugural ceremony commenced with a brief introduction of the Seminar by the Co-Director (CARCL), Assistant Prof. Aparna Singh followed by a Welcome Address by Dr. Nachiketa Mittal, Dean (In-Charge), Unitedworld School of Law, Karnavati University.

Further, Prof. (Dr.) Krishan Mahajan, former Additional Registrar, Supreme Court and former Dean, RGNUL, Punjab delivered the inaugural address and emphasised on the evolution and extent of Artificial Intelligence and discussed the relation of Artificial Intelligence with Public Interest. He even discussed the pros-cons of AI, laying emphasis on Artificial Intelligence substituting human brain and hindering the privacy of an individual.

Dr. Deepak Shishoo, Provost, Karnavati University delivered an insightful speech. The Inaugural Edition of CARCL Newsletter was released by Vice-Chancellor of Karnavati University, and Dean in Charge, Unitedworld School of Law and Co-director, CARCL.

Dr. Malay Patel, Assistant Dean, Unitedworld School of Law, concluded the inaugural session by giving Vote of Thanks.

 

Session 1 began with Paper presentations followed by a panel discussion on the Paradigms of Right to Privacy vis-a-vis constitutionalism and Regulatory Regimes & Emerging Trends in Right to Privacy in India .

The panel consisted Prof (Dr) Krishan Mahajan (Former Additional Registrar, Supreme Court of India and Former Dean, RGNLU, Punjab), Mr. Satish Padhi (Senior Associate, Khaitan & Co), Mr Ashit Kumar Srivastava (Assistant Professor of NLUO) and the Presentations were on various aspects of Data Privacy and Constitutional Perspectives.

Session 2 was based on the Themes: “Data Protection Laws & Blockchain” and “A Critical Analysis of Data Protection Bill and Data Localization”.

Panelists on the dais were Mr. Vivek Ogra (Partner PWC, Gujarat), Adv. Anubhav Ghosh (Associate, The Law Point, Mumbai), who briefly discussed about the impact of blockchain and data privacy on businesses and the negative impact on the consumers. Further, they discussed the lacunaes of Data Protection Policies with Advancing Technology.

The paper presentations covered issues including breach of Data Privacy & solutions to the same, recent amendments&development along with comparison of EU GDPR & Data Protection Bill.

 

Last & the third Session of the day concluded with the paper presentations followed by a panel discussion on “AI and its interplay with Data Privacy” & “Data Protection& allied existing regime and its future prospects”.

The panel consisted of Dr. Shreya Matilal (Assistant Prof.of Law, Rajiv Gandhi School of Intellectual Property Law, IITKharagpur), Advocate Pratik Chaudhari (Partner,Y.J. Trivedi & Co., Ahmedabad) followed by Mr. Ashit Kumar Srivastava (Assistant Professor of Law, National Law University Odisha) whose thought provoking presentation made the discussion more intriguing.

The Panel speakers and the Participants discussed about the fundamental structure of legal systems, Anti -discrimination laws, legal aspects of Artificial Intelligence, Interference of AI with Human Rights and its impact on real life.

The Seminar concluded with valedictory ceremony and Prize distribution followed by a vote of thanks by Assistant Prof. Aparna Singh.

The Best Presenter Award of the Seminar was given to Prakhya Shah &Bhavika Lohiya, 2nd Year students of UWSL, Karnavati University consisting of a subscription of EBC Learning for One Year.
The Second-Best Presenter was awarded to Anuja Shah, LLM candidate GNLU, comprising of a book titled “Thus Spake Their Lordship by Sumeet Malik”.

The Third Best Presenters were Pragya Khubani and AdeebaGhani, 2nd Year students, UWSL, Karnavati University consisting of a book titled “Intellectual Property : Law and Practice (HB)”.
