Ph.D. in Design (Fashion Design)

The Doctoral Program in Fashion Design is being offered by Karnavati University United World Institute of Design. The program is led by professors of repute who have both Industrial as well as Academic Excellence.

The doctoral Program in Fashion Design is suitable of individuals who want to undertake independent original research and aims to stimulate Research and Development in Various aspects of Fashion, focussing on interdisciplinary approach.

Thesis mode is directed towards candidates taking a creative practice research approach to conduct research into fashion design, textile design, curatorial practice, communication, research into advanced textiles and material science techno textiles; smart textiles; or a social science approach to conduct research into an aspect of the fashion and textiles system such as historical or contemporary cultural studies, documentation of Crafts; Craft Cluster Management Practice ; Sustainable Fashion; Artificial Intelligence and Fashion; fashion enterprise and business management to name a few.

Ph.D. in Design (Product Design)

Design is the professional skill of creating and developing context-led concepts into tangible solutions for the benefit of society, industry and the environment. Product design domain requires in-depth knowledge of variety of allied fields such as ergonomics, HCI Design, Socio-technical systems, system designs, human centred design, user interface design, user experience design, kansei engineering, packaging design, information, interaction design and many more. The Ph.D. curriculum offered at the institute have uniquely evolved from a value based interdisciplinary approach to creative problem solving approach wherein research is essential to the process of product design. A Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in product design shall be awarded for a period of advanced study that culminates an research experience along with accompanying thesis that creates building blocks of design knowledge and the application of design thinking process and practice.

Objective of PhD programme in product design is to facilitate deep understanding of design research methodology, innovative product development and creating of new ideas, process and skills in the field of product design and allied fields. Research work shall contribute new design theories, physical product design and design philosophy. The purpose of this programme is to support the creation of products or services that improve the quality of life of people, create new design research methodologies, solving industrial complex problems, help in design education and research at large. PhD researcher should engage with original research and create new knowledge for design fraternity. Also, researcher should get opportunity to enable industrial research collaboration, avail seed grants, business incubation, entrepreneurship and product design services.

Ph.D. in Design (Visual Communication Design)

The Ph.D program of the School of Visual Communication of Unitedworld Institute of Design, Karnavati University, Gandhinagar is a rigorous research led program for academics and professionals who are driven to expand and enhance their knowledge and practice while challenging the boundaries of the discipline through new insights and innovations in the global visual culture. It will promote contextualized immersive engagement and inquiry; explore collaboration with academic and industry professionals; foster original research and synthesis with the aim to innovate new experiences, theories, practices, products, services and knowledge within design in general and visual communication in particular.

Ph.D. in Design (Interior Design)

Ph.D. Interior Design

The UWSL and the Karnavati University are committed to promote quality research and innovation in the field of law and related disciplines by way of encouraging inter-disciplinary research. With an aim to enrich the discourse on law and socio-legal research, the UWSL of Karnavati University is offering two Ph.D. Degree programs, namely: Ph.D. Degree in Law and Ph.D. Degree (Inter-Disciplinary).

Duration of the Programme:

The stretch of the Doctoral programme will be for three years followed by submission of the thesis. The programme is available on fulltime/part time basis.

Course work:

Research scholars registered with Karnavati University need to complete one semester of course work (included in the duration of three years), and then periodically appear before the Research and Development Committee, who monitors the scholars’ progress.

Admission Process

Research scholar interested in getting admission to the Doctoral Programme (Ph.D.) at Karnavati University needs to follow the below mentioned process:

  • The number of available seats for each subject for Ph.D. programme in the university shall be decided well in advance and notified on the university website or by an advertisement.
  • The candidates seeking admission shall have to fill up the prescribed admission form designed by the Karnavati University from time to time and submit the same within the prescribed date specified in the admission announcement. For the academic year 2019-20 the last date to submit the application form is Monday, 8th July 2019.
  • There shall be a common Entrance Test for all the eligible candidates interested for Ph.D. admission in Karnavati University as full time, part time or independent research. For the academic year 2019-20 the entrance test shall be conducted from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm on Sunday, 28th July 2019.
  • Candidates have to appear for Personal Interviews (PI)/Viva Voce at the concerned subject Department/School at Karnavati University, Gandhinagar on Sunday, 28th July 2019 from 1:30 p.m. onwards.
  • The list of qualified candidates shall be displayed on the University website www.karnavatiuniversity.edu.in
  • Only stipulated number (available seats) of candidates shall be admitted to the Ph.D. programme based on the merit position of the eligible candidates. Merit position shall be decided after completion of the entire process of Entrance Test, and Personal Interview (PI)/Viva Voce.
  • The University shall adopt the reservation policy of State Government for admission to Ph.D. programme, however, the reservation shall be observed on a rotation basis within departments by maintaining the overall percentage of the total number of seats announced. The directors of the concerned school in coordination with heads of the departments would coordinate for such provision.

Exemption from Entrance Test

The candidates having one of the following qualifications shall be exempted from the entrance test:

  1. Qualified in SET/UGC-NET, JRF/TRF, Entrance Test of CSIR/ ICAR/ICMR/DBT/DST/ etc.
  2. M.Phil. from other UGC recognized University and whose admission has been done through the Entrance Test.
  3. Candidates who are granted fellowship/scholarship from state/central government agencies.
  4. Candidates with GATE/CAT and more than 75 percentile or 75 percent score (Management & Technology).
  • Candidates eligible for direct admission to the Ph.D. programme without entrance test, group discussion and personal interview:
  1. The candidates who are awarded Junior Research Fellowships (JRF/TRF) or any other prestigious fellowship from UGC, CSIR, DBT, ICMR, ICAR, etc., shall be eligible for direct admission to the Ph.D. programme any time of the year. Such candidates should, however, discuss their topic, research content etc., with the RDC for final approval
  2. Following candidates shall also be admitted direct to the Ph.D. programme on the recommendation of the Admission Committee with the approval of the RDC, provided they fulfill other requirements regarding eligibility, qualification, etc. However, such candidates shall have to present a seminar and discuss the broad area of research before the RDC. Such admissions shall be done on a case to case basis by RDC and RRC.
    1. Candidates sponsored under MoU/agreement between the Karnavati University and University/Institution/research station/laboratory etc. in India or abroad where specific clause(s) exist for registration of candidates for Ph.D. degree by the university and/or those selected under international cultural/educational/research/investigation exchange schemes of Government of Gujarat/India/UN bodies etc.
    2. Non-resident Indians and foreigners residing/working abroad, who have the required qualifications and working in academics/ research/industry/professional bodies for at least 05 years.
    3. Teachers working in government/aided/unaided institutions having at least 03 years of continuous teaching experience at degree and/or postgraduate level in the subject concerned and granted leave for pursuing Ph.D. programme and are awarded fellowship under Quality Improvement Programme or equivalent programme to pursue full-time Ph.D.
    4. Project fellows/Teachers working for minor/major research project approved/accepted by Karnavati University, as per the guidelines of the funding agency will also be exempted from Entrance Test. However, such candidates are required to fulfill other applicable rules and regulations for admission and discuss their research content before the RDC.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Possesses Master’s Degree from a University recognized by UGC or any other qualification recognized as equivalent thereto in such fields of study as are notified for the purpose from time to time by the University with at least 55% marks [50% marks in the case of SC, ST, OBC (Non-creamy Layer) and Differently-Abled and other categories of candidates as per the decision of UGC from time to time, or for those who had obtained their Master’s Degree prior to 19th September, 1991].
  • Possesses a Degree considered equivalent to M.Phil. Degree of an Indian Institution or from a Foreign Educational Institution accredited by an Assessment and Accreditation Agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country for the purpose of assessing, accrediting or assuring quality and standards of educational institutions.
  • Regular employees of Karnavati University are eligible for “In service” Ph.D. programs in their respective faculty provided they meet the eligibility criteria mentioned in UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedure for Award of M. Phil / Ph.D. Degrees) Regulations 2016.

Entrance Exam

  • Procedure for conduct of Entrance Test
    • An Entrance Test shall be conducted with minimum qualifying marks as 50%. The syllabus of the Entrance Test shall consist of 50% of research methodology and 50% shall be subject specific.  Total marks for the Entrance Test will be 100 for 100 MCQs each of one mark and the duration will be 120 minutes.
  • Interview/Viva Voce
    • An interview/viva-voce to be organized by the University when
    • the candidates are required to discuss their research interest/area through a presentation before a duly constituted Department Research Committee. The interview/viva voce shall also consider the following aspects, viz. whether: (a) the candidate possesses the competence for the proposed research; (b) the research work can be suitably undertaken at the Institution/College; (c) the proposed area of research can contribute to new/additional knowledge.
    • If requisite number of candidates do not qualify in the Entrance Test, Hon. VC/ University may, if deemed fit, relax these conditions in a subject/discipline/faculty on a year-to-year basis
