United Institute of Management, Karnavati University organised the 2nd edition of the Model United Nations Conference on 14th & 15th March 2024. The conference brought together delegates from various committees to address critical global and national issues. With three distinct committees – The United Nations General Assemble (UNGA), Lok Sabha, and the General Legislative Assembly (GLA) – the conference provided a platform for the delegates to engage in constructive dialogue, debate and negotiations. This report encapsulates the key discussions, deliberations, and resolutions proposed by the delegates across all committees during the MUN conference. It aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the proceedings, highlighting the diverse perspectives and collaborative efforts undertaken to address the complex challenges facing our world and nation.
Committee: United Nations General Assembly (UNGA)
Agenda: Countering Weaponisation of state-backed terrorist groups
Introduction:
The UNGA convened to address the urgent issue of countering the weaponization of state- backed terrorism. Delegates from various member countries engaged in robust discussions aimed at formulating multifaceted solutions to combat this global threat.
Committee session (Day-1)
The inaugural session witnessed opening statements from member countries, highlighting the severity of terrorism as a systematic weapon of war. China emphasized the need for a comprehensive approach, while Germany stressed the environmental repercussions of terrorism. Several nations, including Israel, Bangladesh, Denmark, and France, condemned state-sponsored terrorism and advocated for upholding fundamental freedoms. Pakistan countered accusations by positioning itself as a victim of terrorism within its borders. Japan emphasized long-term cooperation and stronger coordination between UN entities, while Saudi Arabia condemned the manipulation of Islam to justify extremism. Russia reiterated its opposition to terrorism despite facing criticism due to the conflict in Ukraine. Syria claimed victimhood and accused external actors of supporting terrorism. Collaboration and a unified approach emerged as key themes from the opening statements.
Committee session (Day-2)
Delegates continued discussions on the complex issue of state-sponsored terrorism. A motion by Japan urging recognition of root causes gained majority support. The UAE emphasized education and dismantling misconceptions about religion’s role in terrorism. Pakistan called for international cooperation in their fight against terrorism and argued against attributing intervention in Afghanistan solely to terrorism. Several nations reaffirmed their commitment to combating terrorism, while Israel highlighted socio-economic disparities as a breeding ground. China advocated for inclusive governance and human rights protection. Syria blamed external actors for encouraging terrorism within its borders. Qatar showcased its efforts through a national counter-terrorism committee. The discussions highlighted the multifaceted nature of the issue, emphasizing the importance of addressing root causes. A motion urging discussion on recent attacks by Houthis in the Red Sea was passed. Russia alleged violations of international law, while Israel condemned the attacks for causing economic and human losses. Pakistan sought a diplomatic solution and rejected sending troops. Syria avoided commenting on the Houthis but criticized Israel’s actions. Qatar urged focus on Gaza and warned against US intervention escalating the situation.
Committee: Lok Sabha
Agenda: Reviewing 9 years of NDA
Introduction:
The Lok Sabha convened to review the nine-year tenure of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government. Representatives from various political parties engaged in discussions, debates, and allegations regarding the government’s performance.
Committee session (Day-1)
The inaugural session featured prominent leaders from national parties, including BJP, INC, and others. Discussions revolved around schemes like Udaan and concerns regarding privatization, rural access to technology, farmer welfare, unemployment, inflation, and women’s rights. The ruling party faced criticism on various fronts, while defending initiatives such as Skill India and Startup India.
Committee session (Day-2)
Delegates discussed the economy and defence priorities of the government. The opposition raised questions about Indian army plane crashes, which were countered with factual evidence. Controversial statements were made by some delegates, while others relied on the government’s published reports. The ruling party emphasized its achievements and countered allegations with a factual approach.
Committee: General Legislative Assembly (GLA)
Agenda: Scrutinizing Development in Infrastructural Facilities Along with Economic Development of the state.
Introduction:
The GLA convened to scrutinize infrastructural and economic development in the state of Gujarat. Delegates discussed the symbiotic relationship between infrastructure and economic growth, emphasizing the need for strategic planning and execution.
Committee session (Day-1)
The session featured opening statements from prominent figures and discussions on the effectiveness of infrastructure development and economic growth. Members highlighted the importance of timely completion and maintenance of projects for facilitating state development.
Committee session (Day-2)
Discussions between the ruling party and the opposition focused on maintenance of roads, sewage systems, and connectivity for trade and commerce. Issues raised included sewage system inadequacy and inaccessible routes, with the ruling party justifying its actions.
Overall, the conference served as a testament to the power of dialogue and cooperation in overcoming complex global and national issues, emphasizing the importance of multilateralism and collective action in building a more peaceful, equitable, and sustainable world.
