Planning to Study Bachelors of Fashion Design? Here are some Fashion Terms that you should Know

The fashion industry is one of the most creative and flourishing industries across the world.  After completing bachelors of fashion design, you can become a fashion designer, fashion stylist, textile designer, footwear designer, or fashion blogger. You can launch your own fashion line or even work for fashion brands. However, when you start pursuing bachelors of fashion designyou will come across many fashion jargon. Knowing fashion terms can help you get acquainted with the domain. Here are some fashion terms that you should know:

  1. Haute couture: You must have read the word ‘haute couture’ when reading fashion magazines. It is the French term that defines high-end clothesmaking. It refers to exclusive creations. Haute couture outfits are made by hand from start to finish and they are limited-edition.
  2. Prêt-à-porter: In the fashion industry, the word prêt-à-porter is used to define off-the-rack clothes. In French, it means ready-to-wear. Unlike haute couture, ready-to-wear clothes are mass-manufactured by using machinery. They are available in standardised sizes. They are available in stores.
  3. Embellishment: This is a decorative feature that is added to the fabric of the garment. It could be appliqué, embroidery, sequins, or fastenings.
  4. Silhouette: The term is used to define the basic form or outline of an ensemble. Common silhouettes include those that are straight, asymmetrical, flared, and A-line. Usually, fashion designers design the silhouette of outfits keeping in mind the body type of the person who will be wearing the outfit.
  5. Ensemble: The French word ensemble refers to the complete look. It refers not just to the outfit but also footwear, jewellery, belt and other accessories.
  6. Fashion forward: There are looks that are not popular currently but are so great that they will become popular soon. Fashion designers and celebrities who are termed fashion-forward possess a strong sense of style and are aware of emerging trends.
  7. Neckline: The upper edge of a garment, which normally wraps around the neck, is called the neckline. Some of the common types of necklines are boatneck, halter, off-the-shoulder, plunging, and V-neck.
  8. Outerwear: Clothing worn over an outfit, typically to shield one from winter chills. They are made of thick fabrics. Sweaters, trench coats, quilted puffer jackets, and wool coats are examples of outerwear
  9. Athleisure: In the last few years, athleisure has become quite popular. It is a style of clothing that is comfortable and meant for doing sports. But at the same time it’s fashionable and aesthetically appealing enough that it can be worn for other activities.
  10. Monochrome: Monochrome describes an outfit or style that only has black and white. It can also be worn with matching-toned accessories.
