Unitedworld School of Law, Karnavati University hosted a talk delivered by Supreme Court Advocate and gender rights activist Ms. Malavika Rajkotia as a part of their orientation programme for the class of 2018-23. The topic of the talk was “the complexity of gender issues in family law.” She discussed issues in family law and criminal law through an interdisciplinary perspective incorporating the approaches of sociology, gender studies, and psychology with law. She stressed on the plural character of Indian culture. The areas that her talk dealt with include the issues of patriarchy, gender discrimination, pluralism, gender colonialism and more. She also introduced a fresh understanding of epics like the Mahabharata giving a new dimension to the lessons and thus linking it to the study of family law. The audience had a good opportunity to engage with Adv. Rajkotia through a question and answer session near the end of the programme.
