When was the last time you received a chitthi or khat; a personal letter written by hand on paper? For most of us the answer perhaps is- “I can’t remember!” A handwritten later, no matter the subject, reflects the writer’s emotions with much more truth than any typed message or email. Handwriting can reveal not just the personality of the writer but also the mood and emotion with which s/he wrote. But most of all a chitthi tells us that the writer cared enough to give us her or his time; time to think about us, put pen to paper and write s few words of care and concern. Even if the words were in reprimand, they are still rooted in care.

The last time I received a chitthi was a couple of months ago from a friend congratulating me on my wedding, albeit a year later. The last time I wrote one, was however more than a year ago. It’s time now to write another one.
