The field trip to kachchh, Bhuj by M. Des_ semester2, students of School of Interior and Experience Design, was organised for their module MIED-102 Craft Studies. The module has been framed to learn the technique of Lacquer and pure leather-craft. 20 students with a 3- day workshop learnt the indigenous art techniques.
Lacquer craft, done by Maneuver community, focuses on making kaleidoscopic pattern on local wood. Use of natural colors is used. The coordination of both hands and legs are important for formulating the pattern.
While in Leather craft, done by Malhari community, on pure leather with different stitching, punching systems were explored to make patterns.
After learning these techniques students will have to combine another material to the product and make Interior accessories or Interior Product. Few conceptualized ideas that were illustrated by students were – Doorknobs, Pizza Holder, Coasters, Table spreads to name a few. The innovative transformation of craft with material as metal-to-wood, wood-to-leather, Leather-to-metal etc, will illustrate the idea of fusion of craft with technology focusing on “Indigenous Craft + Technology”
The final Interior element will be completed by using well-equipped workshops at UID.
