On 8th January 2024, we visited Amul industry in Anand, Gujarat . During the visit to, we explored three significant plants: the milk plant, chocolate plant, and ice cream plant. Amul Anand stands as Asia’s largest plant and the world’s 5th largest, with a goal to become the world’s largest by 2030. Remarkably, it holds the title of India’s 1st automatic plant.
Amul, the globally renowned cooperative dairy, stands as a prominent feature of Anand. Owned collectively by thousands of small and medium farmers, Amul has been a revolutionary force, inspiring the establishment of small dairies at district and village levels across various states and countries.
Amul’s impact extends beyond dairy production, contributing significantly to the scientific education of animal husbandry and boosting milk production. The introduction of a milk powder plant has empowered farmers to earn more for their produce. In recent developments, Amul has diversified into the milk-chocolate market, complementing its existing range of products such as butter, ghee, cheese, and baby food.
The birth of the Amul brand in 1957, derived from the Sanskrit word ‘Amulya,’ meaning priceless, and serving as an acronym for Anand Milk Union Limited, adds historical significance. Dr. H. M. Dalaya’s breakthrough in 1954, enabling the production of milk powder from buffalo milk, marked a pivotal moment for India’s dairy industry. This visit showcased the rich history and innovative strides of Amul in the dairy sector.
In the milk plant, a small museum offered insights into the industry’s establishment and the visionaries behind it.The plant operates efficiently, packaging nearly 1200 butter packs every minute.
We also explored the authentic chocolate-making process at the Amul Chocolate Factory in Mogar, a must have for chocolate enthusiasts. The moment before entering to savour the natural aroma of cocoa, allowing our senses to indulge in anticipation. Inside the factory, we were captivated by the impressive tanks containing chocolate ingredients. The formidable machinery and massive equipment surely left a lasting impression on us during this heartfelt chocolate-making journey.
