On 8th February 2024, forty-four students of semester 2 of UWSB went on an experiential trip to ‘Kalamkush Handmade Paper factory’. The visit was organised and coordinated by Prof Bushra Kureshi from UWSB, Karnavati University.
Located at a splitting distance from the Gandhi Ashram on the opposite side of the road, this large workshop is where the Gandhi themed souvenirs are created – charkhas and handmade paper dominate the products. Mahatma’s vision of eco-friendly indigenous products comes alive at this centre. You can walk into the complex and see the creation of these products firsthand. The papermaking unit is the largest here with multiple people employed to create reams of beautiful paper or objects from it. You can also buy souvenirs from the in-house shop. The facility is part of the Gujarat Khadi Gramodyog Mandal and was constructed to make authentic souvenirs in line with the vision of
Mahatma Gandhi.
The students learnt about the history of paper factories and their day-to-day management activities alongside learning concepts on how organic paper is made and processed using handmade traditional methods.
