House-a creative space

The entire world is handling the global pandemic of coronavirus in their own ways. From self-isolation to government-imposed lockdowns for the safety of its people, the world is taking a break from usual routine and trying to be productive, working from home. Our house is no longer a place of rest and relaxation after a long day at work. They have now been converted into our offices, entertainment centers and more. Never thought that a space confined within four walls and a roof would change the way of living. From cooking to calligraphy, people are finding new spaces for creativity.

Work from Home: It has presented a shift in the working methods for many businesses as many see this as the new cultural trend for the upcoming future.

In the open – From a distance: When we are pushed to stay inside the home, we have lost touch with the outside world, so some people thought to reform their balconies. Balconies have been spaces to interact with people and enjoy their time without breaking social distancing. Hence, people want to redecorate their balconies for greater comfort, calmness and the essence of outdoors.

Living the entertainment: In today’s time everyone is having their own personalized entertainment in the form of Netflix, Amazon Prime and many more such services. The living room space rotates from being family spaces to home theater to the dance floor and what not.

Corners for new routines: During this hard time of lockdown, everyone has picked up a lot of new habits- such as reading, novel writing, blogs, paintings and many more. One often picks a spot, a personal corner in the house to indulge in these new habits.

When I came across a few illustrations by William Heath Robison in his book “How to live in a flat”, it changed my perspective of looking at how the house can facilitate in making jovial experiences.

Below are the few illustrations by William Heath Robinson.

These illustrations give us ideas to find ways and means of surviving this lockdown and adding fun to our lives. The role of a house is shifting from that of being a place of shelter, to a place which provides space for all the activities and engages one in developing their personal skills, rather than sitting and risk depression in these hard times.
