Role of Sports, Foreign Language, Yoga and Self Defence

Sports: Just like any other subject, sports should become a compulsory subject to learn, study and perform on field. Physical fitness should be given utmost important. The idea of Health is Wealth should be promoted from top to bottom i.e. Government Authorities to the school going students. The fitness will lead to better jobs and careers. Possibly we will have more medal at Olympics, Commonwealth Games and Asian Games. The apathy towards sports by parents will be over if they find that sports is natural way to lead the life. Sadly, more than 70 percent school in urban areas, popularly known as metro cities do not have a playground.

Foreign Language:  They should be a separate section for foreign language wherein students can opt for any two language of choice to learn. The learning of language should be introduced in the latter years and its should match with aspiration of the student. Languages learned without any definitive goal is a time-wasting exercise. Any new language needs to be practiced day in and day out. Once we stop practicing, we are bound to forget the language. One should not follow the blind race of compulsorily learning a foreign language without having it correlation with the goals. In fact, learning of Sanskrit should be made compulsory. Majority of regional languages in India has its roots in Sanskrit. Learning Sanskrit will be natural to people and once it’s become a regular part of education, the more acceptability will be there. Majority of the scripts are in Devanagari script.  It will be easy to know the scripts in Sanskrit.

Yoga: Yoga is form of practice which purifies the soul and body, however very few people practice it. Ignorance about the benefits of Yoga lead to various life style diseases such as Diabetes, Cholesterol, Hypertension, Stress, Obesity, Paralysis, to name a few. Just as China makes every student practice Martial Arts, Yoga should be an integral part of daily classroom activity. Every day one classroom period should be dedicated to Yoga Learning

Self Defence: Learning Karate, Kung fu, kick boxing, Taekwondo, Jujitsu, Judo is considered to be a part of extra-curricular activity. However, with the rising crime rate in the country it is important to teach self defence to all the students. It should not the be the privilege of few students. In fact, the Indian form of Martial Art ‘Kalaripayattu’, should be popularised. It will lead to the revival of the art and help in getting the livelihood for the villagers who have helped to keep this art alive.

Compulsory Summer Internships:  There are lot problems for which we are dependent on the external resource. Have we ever thought, why can we learn these professions? To start with let me talk about the Gardening. To learn gardening is easy and simple. But there are certain rules that we should keep in mind while practicing gardening. Imagine if we would have learned the nuances of Gardening in the school day, then it would have been great. Due to rise in concrete jungle, people have terrace gardens, balcony gardens to nurture, however they have to hire someone to keep the garden intact.  Similarly, do you think we can’t learn the job of a plumber. Plumbing can be learned within a month and it does not require any specialised knowledge as prerequisite. Similarly cooking, cleaning, painting, carpentry, pottery, can be learnt in a short span of time. Summer vacations are ideal to learn these skills as it is going to be fun with learning.
