The Masterclass conducted on the 6th & 7th of October by Dhrumil Nagori of Plymart Co. took the interior design students on a deep dive into the world of wood. During his 2-day session, he spoke about all the types of wood and applied materials related to it.
While explaining how to choose the correct type of wood, he mentioned the knots that occur in a piece once cut from the tree trunk. The knots in the plank of wood are those areas that were earlier connected to the branch and are the weakest parts. The outer parts of the trunk are usually clear of knots, whereas the inner parts have them. A knot usually interrupts the smooth grain of the wooden plank. There are various types of knots found in wood ranging from dead knots, sound knots, pin knots, rotten knots to black knots.
Knots strengthen the spot where they are often used, such as a sailor’s knot or the Palomar knot. Hence as opposed to a usual knot on a string or a rope, as designers, one should avoid using the plank of wood in a way where the load-bearing point falls directly on a knot!
