Within the framework of the Discover Design in India program, students in their second semester of Interior Design at B.Des are exploring the intricate world of traditional crafts in Rajasthan. They’ve been granted the unique opportunity to directly engage with master artisans, learning the techniques of molela, pichhwai, and kaavad crafts while gaining insights into the profound narratives embedded within these art forms. Through this experience, they’ve come to appreciate the artisans’ longstanding familial ties to their craft, as well as the profound religious, cultural, and economic significance these crafts hold for them. 71 students along with Assistant Professor Viraj Wadia, Zankruti Raval and Aakansha Batra interacted with the crafts persons in their own context, engaging with their tools and techniques to uncover a lost bank of knowledge wherein contributing to the craft compendium.
Under the DISCOVERY DESIGN IN INDIA module, students of the second semester, B.Des Interior & Furniture Design program, delved into the rich world of Pichwai painting, a traditional art form hailing from Nathdwara, Rajasthan . Guided by master artist Shri Paramanand Sharma and his family, they immersed themselves in the intricate techniques and symbolism of this vibrant style of the craft. Through with hands-on explorations, students created stunning Pichwai artworks, depicting scenes from Hindu mythology, adorned with intricate details and vivid colors. Under Mukhyaji Shri Paramanand Sharma’s mentorship, students honed their artistic skills and gained a deeper understanding of the cultural significance behind each brushstroke. This transformative experience not only enriched their design acumen but also fostered a profound reverence for the heritage and craftsmanship of Pichwai painting.
