Unitedworld Institute of Design (UID) rolled out its Induction Programme for the B.Design Programme (Fashion Design and Lifestyle Accessory Design Depts.) with much fervour.
“On the other side of your roadblock, lies your freeway.”….freeway to SUCCESS! Truly our best moments are those when we feel profoundly awkward, despondent, or unfulfilled, and still, come out as a complete winner by facing our fears and giving our best efforts.
UID Induction Programme is one such platform which helps the new entrants to come out of their ruts and start the new chapter of their lives with ease.
All the esteemed dignitaries including the Deans, Directors and HODs present during the event spoke on various topics right from the inclusion of technology and innovation in design to readying the aspiring design students for the upcoming paradigm shift of the design industry and how UID can provide these budding creative geniuses with the right platform to bloom into a seasoned design professional.
The young cohorts were introduced to the CSD Team, Students’ Affairs Department, and the Students’ Council. ‘UrIDentity’ and learning while playing was the central idea of the introductory session.

The second day of #UrIDentity induction for Fashion Design and Lifestyle Accessory Design batch 2019 – 2023, tapped the windows of their creative minds by a screening of acclaimed BBC and National Geographic documentaries, “Objectified” and “Before the Floods” respectively. The first documentary showcased the approach to product usefulness, innovation, aesthetics, durability and sustainability, while the second one inspired a solution-oriented approach towards critical concerns of climate change. Aspiring designers, on the first day of their higher education, gave a full house and positive feedback by expressing that creativity can be found in any form. Inspiration can be drawn from mundane objects but the end product should be attractive and out of the box.
Mr. Gaurang Anand, theatre artist and creative professional engaged the foundation students of Fashion Design and Lifestyle Accessory Design batch 2019 – 2023 on the first day of 4-day Theatre workshop. The workshop was designed to construct a liberal thought process among the students. There was enthusiastic participation from the students who felt that the workshop made them observe, imagine, and rethink the way they see things.
Mr. Rahul Bhattacharya, an educationist, art historian and Associate Professor of Department of Visual Communication, conducted Performance Art workshop for the foundation students of Fashion Design and Lifestyle Accessory Design batch 2019 – 2023 on the first day of 4-day workshop.
Performance Art, unlike the scripted theatre, is new and is about using body and movement. Aligned to the UN’s sustainable goal of gender equality, the workshop will lead to physical sculptures to react the parity. Students found the workshop to be interesting and out of the box.
Facilitator for 3rd workshop, designed for the foundation students of Fashion Design and Lifestyle Accessory Design batch 2019 – 2023 is Mr. Karan Sajnani. A musician and a lover of art, he took the students through an exciting journey of producing music from mundane objects. Students enjoyed working in teams and were amazed by the music produced from their body parts without using any props.

The Induction Program hosted by UID for the new entrants is where dreams are being nurtured, budding designers are encouraged to reach at the zenith of success by flying on their wings of imagination, and limitless possibilities are created through sharing of ideas.

Mr. Madhavan Pillai, an artist, archivist and curator, acquainted the foundation students of Product Design, Automobile & Transportation Design, and Interior Design (batch 2019 – 2023) to various components of a camera on the first day of the 4-day Photography workshop. The students explored Nature, outside the classroom, and captured objects that caught their fancy.
On the second day of the Theatre, Performance Art and Music workshops was met with renewed vigour and enthusiasm as the facilitators, Mr. Gaurang Anand, Mr. Rahul Bhattacharya and Mr. Karan Sajnani respectively steered the students into creative activities in groups and individually.
Ms. Pramila Choudhary, sensitised the foundation students of Product Design, Automobile & Transportation Design, and Interior Design (batch 2019 – 2023) towards responsible consumption on the first day of the 4 day Multi Media workshop. Students watched documentaries about tonnes of human wastage with amazement and were compelled to think about responsible behaviour in practical situations.
Expressing through story telling captured the imagination of the foundation students of Product Design, Automobile & Transportation Design, and Interior Design (batch 2019 – 2023) on the first day of the 4-day Story Telling workshop conducted by Mr. Lalon. Aimed at tweaking their imagination, the students sat pondering over words to create narratives. Apparently simple but thought provoking.
Ms. Shradha Jain, leading authority in the Ahmedabad boardgame community, conducted 1st day of the 4-day Game Design workshop for the foundation students of Product Design, Automobile & Transportation Design, and Interior Design (batch 2019 – 2023) by introducing the students to table and board games. Simple yet tricky, students found the games to be interesting and compelling. It taught them patience and mindfulness.
Toy Making workshop conducted by Ms. Anurag Rana transported the foundation students of Product Design, Automobile & Transportation Design, and Interior Design (batch 2019 – 2023) to their childhood on the first day of the 4-day workshop. The students were given plastic balls, first toy given to a child at the age of 8 to develop their motor skills, to recreate products of their choice. The activity induced out of the box thinking and material understanding.
The third day of the Performance Art workshop under the guidance of Mr. Rahul Bhattacharya, propagated the message of gender equality on the campus of KU. Foundation students of Fashion Design and Lifestyle Accessory Design batch (2019 – 2023), divided in a group of 10 each, used adornment and props to spread awareness about equality by breaking gendered roles.
Mr. Soumitra Dasgupta, conducted Game Design workshop for the foundation students of Visual Communication Design and Animation & Motion Graphics (batch 2019 – 2023) on 1st day of 4 day workshop. Mr. Dasgupta guided students to create board games with the with the objective of cleaning Ahmedabad by taking into account elements like pollution, cleanliness, etc. Activity induced brain storming and collaboration among students.
Mr. Dasharha Sevak, facilitator for Puppetry workshop for foundation students of Visual Communication Design and Animation & Motion Graphics (batch 2019 – 2023), combined story telling to social cause and added a new dimension to the thinking pattern of young cohorts.
Ms. Preeti Das, Additional Director of the Unitedworld School of Liberal Arts, took the foundation students of Visual Communication Design and Animation & Motion Graphics (batch 2019 – 2023) through an engrossing experience of story narration as an art.
The Game Design, Photography, Story Telling, Multi Media, Music and Toy Making workshops conducted by Ms. Shradha Jain, Mr. Madhavan Pillai, Mr. Lalon, Ms. Pramila Choudhary, Mr. Karan Sajnani and Ms. Anurag Rana respectively for foundation students batch 2019 – 2023, steered the imagination of the students to see mundane objects as a platform for creating art.

Mr. Rahul Bhattacharya, an educationist, art historian and Associate Professor of Department of Visual Communication, UID, conducted a 4-day Performance Art workshop for the foundation students of Fashion Design and Lifestyle Accessory Design (batch 2019 – 2023). Performance Art, unlike the scripted theatre, is new and is about using body and movement. Aligned to the UN’s sustainable goal of gender equality, the workshop led to physical sculptures to react to the parity. Students, dressed as the opposite gender, thoughtfully displayed a plethora of issues faced by the women on a daily basis. Through unique postures, they were able to catch the attention of the passerby thus successfully delivering and spreading the intended messages i.e. welfare of women and gender parity.
