Students Planning to Join Journalism and Mass Communication Colleges: Here are a few tips to Write Clearly and Concisely

One of the most important skills that students of journalism and mass communication colleges need to master is clear and concise writing. In a fast-paced world where information is constantly changing and evolving, being able to communicate clearly and effectively is essential. Writing for newspapers is different from writing for the web. Similarly, writing for the radio is different from writing for television. It is therefore important for journalism and mass communication students to learn about different writing styles and develop their own distinct style. If you are planning to join journalism and mass communication colleges, honing your writing skills is quite important. Here we share with you tips to write clearly and concisely:

  1. Keep it simple

When it comes to writing, less is often more. Use simple language that your audience can easily understand. Avoid using jargon or technical terms unless absolutely necessary.

  1. Be clear and concise

Make sure your meaning is clear by being as specific as possible. Get straight to the point. One of the effective ways to write clearly is to outline your ideas before you begin to write. This will serve as a framework to organise your thoughts.

  1. Use active voice

Active voice is more concise and easier to read than passive voice. For example, “The reporter wrote the article” is written in active voice, whereas “The article was written by the reporter” is written in passive voice. In passive voice, the the verb precedes the noun. This makes it an indirect and lengthier way of communicating a point. In an era when the attention span of readers is getting shorter, an article which is heavy on passive voice is more likely to lose the readers.

  1. Use specific words and images

Use specific words and images rather than abstract concepts to make your writing more vivid and understandable. For instance, instead of saying, “He was angry,” you could say, “His face turned red and he clenched his fists.”

  1. Edit and revise your work

Before you publish or submit your work, be sure to edit and revise it carefully. Cut out any unnecessary words or phrases. Look for sentences that can be shortened or rewritten in an active voice.

  1. Learn how to research

There is always a curious and interesting mind behind every great story. Students who are aspiring to join journalism and mass communication colleges must hone their observation and research skills. Right from finding reliable information sources to how to attribute information, good research skills come in handy in writing stories that are authentic and accurate.
